FIRST THURSDAYS – FREE EXHIBITION SPACE FOR LOCAL ARTISTS!
Throughout 2012 Stour Space welcomes applications from artists working in, or responding to the Olympic development.
In the boroughs hosting London’s Olympic project, the local vibrant art sector is at risk of being lost amidst a corporate shadow. There is therefore the need to promote urban development that supports creative enterprises and individual artists that are able to reflect the talented capacity of our local community.
Aside from the obvious positive outcomes that the Olympic development can bring to the area, it is also important to recognize how increasing land and property prices, heightened interest leading to a greater demand for space, and the inclusion of new (more commercially profitable) business, may put the artistic sector of Hackney Wick at risk.
Through a submission-based process Stour Space will collaborate with external curators to show the work of local emergent artists, and encourage new innovative work for public education. Exhibitions will be held on a monthly basis, promoting a philosophy to collaborate on new ideas, and generating the potential for artists to realise large-scale exhibitions.
This exhibition program will also offer a focus on the promotion and presentation of art in the area, and the importance of the art sector. Through promoting and supporting an already vibrant sector this project aims to offer a new format to elevate the capacity of artists in the Olympic borough, and offers a new way to respond to the changing landscape and economy for public knowledge, discussion and wider education.
